Peter and all his Jazz - Sunday 1pm-3pm
Peter Burrage has been a member of Hospital Radio Yare since April 2002 and the
Programme Manager since 2006. The main reason why he joined was to broaden the
appeal of the Station to include Jazz music fans and hopefully gain a
few converts along the way.
Peter said that in the early and mid Fifties, before Rock became the dominating
popular music form, there looked to be only two ways music could go. Replacing
the Big Swing Bands, which dated back into the Thirties and Forties, was Jazz music
produced by smaller Bands, Groups and Combos. These were divided into two types:
The Dixieland/Traditional Jazz Bands like Louis Armstrong and Modern Jazz groups,
such as The Dave Brubeck Quartet.
Peter admitted to being one of the Modern Jazz devotees and in his youth was a
regular at Ronnie Scott's Soho Jazz Club where he saw many live performances of some
of the greats of Modern Jazz. He expresses an enjoyment of other types of music but
his first love remains his lasting love.
Peter has a collection of over 1,000 Jazz albums on Vinyl alone and continiously adds
to his collection with modern re-mastered classics on CD. Amongst his favourites are
the Saxophonist, Courtney Pine and Pianist, Ses Viorn Spencer. He says, 'the current Jazz
stars are technically fantastic and artistically creative with accomplishment to compare
to the masters of the past.'
Peter's show is called 'Jazz Club', it's on every Sunday afternoon
between 1 and 3 o'clock. If you would like to conact Peter or send a request please email
pburrage@hospitalradioyare.com or phone the Studio on 01493 842613.
