Monday 7pm-8pm
I have been a presenter at the station for 15 years. My first job was co-presenter
with Graham Butler for the Sunday morning request show which was for the patients
on the GP ward at the Northgate Hospital. I owe a lot to Graham as he taught me
to “drive the desk,” as we used to say in those days. We took it in turns to collect
request from the ward mostly on the Sunday mornings but sometimes on the preceding
Saturday afternoons. In those days most of the requests were only to be found on
vinyl. It was therefore time-consuming digging out the records and required a lot
if skill to Cue the requested tracks on the three turntables.
Some said we were
one of the best double presenter acts on the station. I discovered early that Graham
was more than a little posh having had a public school education he spoke with impeccable
RP making his speech sound very BBC Radio 4. It became my roll and pleasure to tease
him on air about his noble inheritance which invariably made him laugh and that
became the hallmark and attraction of our show.
Some time before Graham left hospital
radio I was offered my own show which I agreed to call, “My Kind Of Music.” That
was long before Michael Barrymore’s TV show of the same name. I almost changed the
name as Michael’s show became a National Institution but am pleased now that I didn’t.
I love music and spent 15 years of my life as a professional musician having had
recording contracts, TV and radio appearances as well as UK and intercontinental
tours on my CV.
In My Kind Of Music I do what it says on the tin and play the type
of music I like to listen to. On Monday evenings I enjoy turning the studio speakers
up high to play the music which I like. (Wishing & hoping it will appeal to many
of our listeners as well) As you might expect, being a drummer, I love a tight rhythm
section in all music forms from Jazz to Rock. I also love good melody and harmony
so it follows that I worship the Beatles as they had it all. I suppose the component
in music I value least is the lyrics. Although there have been some amazing and
moving words written for songs, not least in “She’s Leaving Home” by the “Fab. Four.”
But in my opinion those words would not have been so poignant without the group’s
great tune.
I suppose I am mellowing with age as you are just as likely to hear
me play a Frank Sinatra track these days as any other. I am not a supporter of any
one particular genre of music as I believe in what Ray Charles said, “There are
only two types of music, Good and Bad.
